future!verse: A Quick Visit

While sorting out meeting up with Liz's parents hadn't been too much of a hassle, trying to find a time to meet his family was proving to be more difficult than it really should be. They ended up having to take a shuttle over to Scotland - a fairly quick trip, though of course not so quick as the transporters would have been - where they'd be staying with Scotty's sister for a few days before heading back to California. Of course, traveling from one side of the world to the other meant they'd had to get time zones sorted out, and in order to arrive at Scotland at a reasonable time, they'd had to leave California at a very unreasonable time.

The trip was uneventful, and when they reached their destination, the worst they'd have to contend with was a bit of jet lag. For once - miracle of miracles - it wasn't raining, and while the air was definitely cooler than in California, it wasn't half so bad as Scotty had feared it would be. And although it didn't exactly feel like home, not anymore, he realized he'd missed it more than he thought. "Well, love, this is it." Now to go find his father, who was supposed to be picking them up.

She had been nervous about meeting his parents and though she'd already developed a comfortable relationship with his sister, she was still a bit nervous. With the face to face meeting, she would be able to hear them should she not block them. She was already debating on how much of that she should allow. No one else but Monty knew about her telepathy. Of course, much of the crew of the Enterprise crew knew, but they wouldn't have relayed it back to anyone else. Like her parents. Regretfully, she still hadn't come up with a good way to tell them.

On arrival, jet lagged and stiff from sitting, but not nearly as bad as it could have been, Liz took Monty's hand and smiled. Looking around she could feel what he felt about the terrain. Of course it seemed to be a much better bit of weather than usual, she was still noticing the things that he would have remembered and loved. "You're going to show me around and all the places you loved and remember, right?" she asked, looking like a little kid, excited to see something new for the first time.

Liz laughed lightly and squeezed his hand back. She figured that they weren't going to get much done in the next couple days. They were probably just going to want to sleep and get back on time with Scotland. This was her first time here and considering she'd spent so much time out in space traveling the galaxy, it was a surprise that she hadn't visited more than a quarter of North America. Mostly, she had stayed wherever her parents were.

When Monty's father came walking up to them, relaxed, hands in his pockets, she smiled. You are more like him than I realized, she directed his way, not wanting to say it out loud for no reason other than paranoia. She smiled as he greeted them and looked mildly stunned, unsure how to respond because this was her father-in-law. She wasn't her mother, so hugs weren't the immediate answer.

The warm greeting made it feel right and she hugged him, smiling the whole time. Yes, there were plenty of similarities between Monty and his father. Arthur, luckily, had always been a kind man when she spoke with him, which wasn't as often as she may like, but often enough. When he expressed that she was the woman who stole his heart, she blushed, unable to stop the reaction.

"I suppose I am," she said. At this rate, she was going to have a smile planted on her face the entire time they were there. Her cheeks already hurt. "It's lovely to finally meet you in person. I've been anticipating it for some time now," she said kindly.

You don't like me that much. She pretended to ignore the mini-conversation they were having. Some people said that couples had a very strong bond were able to communicate wordlessly; Monty and Liz took that to a whole other level. Liz laughed when Arthur admitted to Rose being about in a fit of hysterics. He may be teasing, but Liz was pretty sure that was the truth of it. Rose wasn't very subtle... ever.

Arthur called Monty 'lad' and Liz held down another laugh. She briefly thought about how Monty would adapt those same kind of habits as a father. She was avoiding the baby conversation though. She didn't want to start up on that again until they were settled and things felt normal.

Liz just nodded silently. She didn't need an apology for his mother. She was well aware of what she was getting into with him. There were plenty of things for her to be nervous about and meeting Rose was definitely one of them. Arthur, as mild mannered as he was, had to be the easy part. Rose was a whole different story.

Monty was falling asleep on the ride back, but so was Liz. They were both tired and rightfully so. With the time changes completely messed up she was having a hard time keeping her yes open. Traveling could make even the best of them tired.

Upon arrival they were bombarded with hugs and tears. Liz hugged her mother-in-law as she should, thanking her for having them - as if that was needed - and then they were on their way into the house. Liz was anxious to meet Clara in person. They'd had a few meaningful conversations and Liz felt closest to her already. She'd saved them from the wrath of Rose more than a few times over the years.

Liz responded politely to Rose, answer questions and being generally pleasant. She did love his mother. She was eccentric and she took some getting used to, but she was a wonderful woman. Monty was only a shell of himself, having been more tired than Liz, or maybe Liz was just better at faking it than he was. She sipped from her cup and went on chatting until Arthur managed to detach Rose from her son and daughter-in-law.

There was all of a second before they were being interrupted. William, Clara's son, wedged himself between she and Monty and Liz laughed when he took a piece of Monty's scone. Immediately Liz wrapped an arm around him and smiled, "You are awfully big. I had no idea," she teased, running a hand through the little one's hair.

Liz had to stifle a laugh. You weren't supposed to laugh when kids were behaving badly, but what was she supposed to do? The kid was a spitfire and there was absolutely no holding that back. She assumed it was because he was half Scott. From the stories she knew, the Scott boys - meaning Monty - were a handful.

When Clara enters and scolds William, she looks down at him then back up at Clara. Liz was first to get up off the couch and cross the room. She had to hug this woman. She'd been her own personal anchor while out in space. Liz wraps her arms around Clara, her littlest one, too. "I am so glad to finally meet you in person," she said, smiling brightly. Liz pulled back and beamed at Clara, then made a few unflattering faces at Kevin.

Liz and Monty recovered eventually from their stupor of traveling. Once they did, they were able to do some proper socializing and stayed and Clara's for the remainder of their visit. That particular morning, Liz had woken up before Monty and went downstairs to eat breakfast. She ended up sitting at the dinner table, holding Kevin and feeding him, laughing at the noises he made while he ate. Will was being his typical nosey self and wondering when Uncle Monty would be up. Liz was going to suggest he go wake him up soon since they were going to take Will out today. Clara's bright idea to have Monty agree to have kids would hopefully come in the form of Will, the very clone of her husband.

Liz had to laugh when she saw her husband carting a munchkin into the room. He was completely foggy and half asleep, which she'd gotten used to over the years. He was not a morning person. Liz on the other hand, once she was awake, she was awake. There was just no making that stop. Kevin gurgled excitedly suddenly. Apparently Uncle Monty was a favorite among the kids. She understood the feeling.

"Morning, sunshine," she teased, knowing that this is precisely the reason that the nickname came up at all.

Liz was trying really hard not to fall out of her chair laughing. Poor Monty was stuck with a kid on his back and drinking coffee. "Will, if you don't let your uncle get ready for the day we'll never be able to go out today," she tempted him. This of course was met with some whining and a bit of squealing. As a five year old, he was at least suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder - meaning it all changed a second later. Liz put Kevin in his high chair and headed back upstairs to shower and get ready for the day. At least one of them needed to be awake for the day.

[identity profile] elizabethdehner.livejournal.com 2010-11-17 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Liz realized that maybe throwing Monty into the middle of children wasn't going to be a successful way to convince him that kids were a good idea. When he was coming upstairs, she had just stepped out of the shower. She was still getting used to the way that water on Earth felt. In space, you could take a real hot water shower, but it all felt different. It wasn't quite like what you got while on the ground.

"I didn't mean to release Will on you," she said, looking regretful.

[identity profile] elizabethdehner.livejournal.com 2010-11-17 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
It was good thing he was never much of a morning person or she'd be even more worried. She was probably stressing herself unnecessarily. It wasn't like they had kids on the way right now or that they had even discussed it. This was going to be a whole new adventure for them if they could both get going in the same direction. She wasn't entirely sure that it was going to happen. Of course, there would be days when it was harder than others.

She took the one-armed hug and let him go on to take a shower. "Promise," she added as he wandered off. Liz waited in the room, getting herself ready for the day. When she was ready, she laid back on the middle of the bed, hair fanned out all over the place in reckless curls - weather was doing crazy things to her hair - and let herself think for a while.

Liz was lost in her own head, so she wasn't paying any attention to Monty or ambient sounds of what was happening in the house. She sighed heavily just before he walked in. She was stretched out on her back and when he mentioned the picnic, Elizabeth simply nodded. She was spinning her wedding ring on her finger, staring at the ceiling, pretending that things were different for the better.

She had expected some sort of emotion that let her know that being back on Earth was right. Her father managed to suck an ounce of hope from her. Her mother, as wonderful as she was, was simply passive. Meeting his family had been a blessing and a curse because now she had another family she had to explain her telepathy to at some point. Sure, she kept secrets from the crew on the Enterprise - thinking about the ship made her wince - but keeping it from family wasn't something she could do. She sighed again, the only reaction she could come up with lately. Nothing felt right and she worried it meant she did something wrong.
