In-Depth Character Profile

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Scotty's about average. Average height, average build. He's not overly muscular, or at least, his musculature isn't super-defined, but he's fairly strong. He may not have washboard abs and bulging biceps, but he's toned from working in the engine room and having to climb through Jefferies tubes and such. He's neither slender nor heavyset.

2. How old is he?
36

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
It depends on who he's with and what he's wearing. In uniform, he carries himself much differently than he does out of uniform. In uniform, as Chief of Engineering, he carries himself with authority; he's lord and master of the engine and he knows it, and he lives up to it. Out of uniform, off-duty, he's much more relaxed and easy-going. [For reference, check the difference between his posture/attitude on Delta Vega, and then after when he's got a proper uniform on, especially the final scene where we finally see Scotty where he belongs.]

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He's in good health, if a bit prone to injury due to his line of work. As stated before, he's not buff, but he's not out-of-shape, either.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
It very much depends on the situation. He's most comfortable in the engine room and moves most naturally there. Generally speaking, he's pretty light on his feet, very energetic, and for the most part, pretty graceful as well. He tends to talk with his hands, gesturing a lot when he speaks. He's prone to moments of clumsiness outside the engine room, particularly in situations he's not entirely comfortable with, or when he's unsure of himself.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
By Hollywood standards, he's hardly worth looking at at all – but we all know how far we can trust Hollywood to decide such things. Basically, he's not Captain Kirk, but he's not ugly. He's attractive in a very down-to-earth sort of way. He doesn't consider himself incredibly attractive, but he doesn't hate the way he looks either. He takes care of himself, but he has more important things to worry about than whether or not he's hot. [Of course, attractiveness is relative. Personally I find him far more attractive than Kirk, but YMMV.]

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
He's pretty fair, actually. A little on the pale side. After all, he spent six months on a frozen wasteland and went from that to serving on a starship, and has spent most of his eighteen years in Starfleet on various ships. The man hasn't seen real sunlight since they stopped off at Earth to award the captaincy to Kirk and refit the warp core. [Ugh, how long would it have taken them to get back to Earth on impulse? Maaaaan.]

As for scars, he's got a few. There's a spattering of scars around his wrists from burns sustained while wielding an arc welder. His hands are pretty calloused. There's a scar on his back from where he got hit with a cable that had snapped, and he didn't bother going to medical until a few days later when it started to get a bit stiff. And there's one on his right thigh that he got from catching himself on a jagged edge while trying not to fall out of a Jefferies tube. Most recently, a bit of scarring from severe electrical burns sustained whilst working on a faulty energizing coil. The new scars are light and barely noticeable, and often covered by the sleeves of his uniform. [Player note: All scarring is personal fanon, consistent with the backstory I've concocted for this particular Scotty.]

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
His hair's supposed to be darkish. But when the character is in the canon for a limited amount of time and therefore a limited amount of icons? I've taken some liberties. His icons range from dark haired to ginger to blond, but really he's dark haired. His hair is kept short, and his hairline, unfortunately, is receding like the waters of the Red Sea. He wears the standard Starfleet sideburns, and is supposed to be clean-shaven, but again, icons. He's a bit scruffy with the facial hair.

9. What color are his eyes?
Blue-grey, but part of his right eye is brown. Again, icons. I don't think we ever get a good close-up of Scotty's face in the movie, so it's hard to tell if Pegg was given contacts to wear or not. So he's got Simon Pegg's eyes and who cares if TOS Scotty had dark eyes because Urban's McCoy sure as hell didn't have blue eyes.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
He's pretty average. That's about it. He's ridiculously adorable, though.

11. What are his chief tension centers?
Mainly shoulders/shoulder blades. He does a lot of work with his hands, and it translates to tension in the shoulders. He has a tendency to roll his shoulders when he's tense, or to cross his arms tightly, putting more tension on his shoulders.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
For the most part, it's the standard Starfleet uniform. He wears Operations red, with stripes and insignia denoting Lieutenant Commander, with black trousers and black boots. Off duty, his civvies are usually a comfortable pair of jeans and a t-shirt. 23rd century jeans and t-shirt. And boots. He likes his boots. On special occasions he wears his kilt. Because he's Scottish.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
He's equally comfortable in his uniform and his civvies. And he always enjoys the chance to wear his kilt. The uniform is tailored to fit him, and his civvies fit comfortably. He's never too concerned about what he's wearing; his uniform tends to get stained with all kinds of grease and such down in engineering.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
See above. He's got his Starfleet uniform and his civvies.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxers, definitely. Unless he's wearing the kilt. The kilt, he totally wears traditionally.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Not incredibly deep, but not high, either. Sort of in the middle. Average.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He doesn't hesitate over his words when he's in the engine room. When he's on duty, he's certain and sure of himself, because hesitation in the engine room could very well lead to death or serious injury. He speaks clearly,

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
He's Scottish. His accent tends toward Glaswegian, although it's not nearly so thick as those who've grown up in Glasgow, since he grew up around Aberdeen. As for verbal tics, he has a very distinctive pace to the way he speaks. He tends to “er” and “ah” a bit when he's uncertain. He also has a tendency to speak in run-on sentences, particularly when he gets going. Sometimes he starts talking and loses his train of thought and just sort of stumbles through what he was saying without really knowing where he's going with it.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
His first language is Standard, which is the official language of the United Federation of Planets. He's also fluent in Scots Gaelic, and knows a smattering of various other languages, mostly interesting and colorful curses – useful for berating recalcitrant machinery.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
When he's stressed or exceedingly drunk, his accent thickens to a point of near-incomprehensibility.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
It depends on the situation. For the most part, he's decent enough at impromptu speaking, especially when it comes to working in the engine room. In situations were he's uncertain or nervous, he has to think a bit.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He's fairly eloquent, if a bit rough around the edges when it comes to speaking. He's definitely not a great speaker, and he wouldn't win any awards for public speaking, but he gets his point across.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
He skipped ahead a few years in school, got into Glasgow University around 16, and started his Starfleet career at 18. He's extremely intelligent. Not only does he have a degree in mechanical engineering, he's also extensively studied physics, and was in fact assistant to one of the physics instructors at Starfleet Academy for a short period of time. He postulated the theory of transwarp beaming.

He's also incredibly lacking in common sense. If you've ever watched The Original Series... How many times did Scotty throw himself head-first into danger to protect a pretty woman? Or really just exhibit poor judgment in general? Yeah. That's the guy that XI Scotty is supposed to turn into.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
As Chief Engineer, he needs to be able to think on his feet. He needs to be able to make snap decisions, as those decisions could mean life or death for the entire ship and her crew. Ejecting the warp core to escape the black hole, for instance.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
He's extremely intuitive. He knows when something's off in the engine room because something doesn't “feel” right. He tends to go with his first instinct. He is, however, also prone to fits of logic, although he tries to avoid that whenever possible. He's a fairly even mix of idealistic and practical, optimistic yet grounded with a healthy dose of realism.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
As mentioned above, he skipped ahead a few years in primary and secondary school, and attended Glasgow University at 16. At 18 he was awarded a scholarship to Starfleet Academy, but he chose to spend his first few years in the field. He returned to the Academy and finished his schooling there.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Above all else, he is an engineer. His specialization is mechanical engineering, but as Chief Engineer of the Enterprise, he has a working knowledge of electrical engineering as well. Theoretical and relativistic physics are also a specialty of his.

He's always interested in learning new engineering techniques, and in a good old-fashioned physics debate.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
He is absolutely an extrovert. Out-going, friendly, always willing to lend a hand, an ear, or a shoulder to lean on if need be. He does enjoy his downtime every now and then, but given the choice, he'd rather socialize.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
He's very even-tempered. In his rare flashes of temper, he calms down fairly quickly. Cheerful, enthusiastic, out-going, and up-beat is his usual way of doing things. He's very dedicated to his work, however, and tends to be a bit distracted and short with people when he's on the job, although off-duty he's generally much more relaxed. He gets tense when he's stressed, but he tries not to take it out on other people.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
As a Starfleet officer, he's used to encountering the unknown. It depends on the situation – he's good at reading the general mood of a situation, and will react accordingly. For the most part, however, meeting new people simply means a chance to either make a new friend or at least gain a friendly acquaintance.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
A mix of both, really. As Chief Engineer, he has to know when to act, and as a Starfleet officer operating in certain situations he has to know how to react.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Fight. He's got a mean right hook.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
He has a very healthy sense of humor, and is definitely not above pulling pranks – but only harmless pranks, ones that the recipient can enjoy as much as everyone else. He enjoys telling jokes and hearing jokes, and sadly, has been known to make a pun or two.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
He passed the pysch exam for serving aboard a starship. Soooo.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
His first tour of duty as a Starfleet cadet was a major influence in him deciding to study engineering – he'd studied physics at Glasgow, but entered the Engineering program at Starfleet after serving aboard his first ship.

14. What does he fear?
Getting promoted. No, really. The last thing he wants to end up captain of his own ship and unable to work in the engine room. He doesn't want to be captain; he just wants to be an engineer.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
He's pretty much achieved the goal he most wanted – to be an engineer on a good ship. The fact that he's Chief Engineer of the finest flagship in the fleet is just icing on the cake.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
He's not too proud of the number of times he was arrested in his youth for Public Intoxication. He's a lot less wild than he used to be, and he'd prefer it if his crew didn't know about his crazy shenanigans. Oh, and there's those times he drunkenly voluntarily pranced around in a dress for several hours. He doesn't make a habit of cross-dressing, though.

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
He was a mama's boy, growing up, but he has a very loving relationship with both his mother and his father.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
He has an older sister, Clara, with whom he's very close. She tended to get him out of trouble when he was younger.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
He's got a large family, and is close to his grandparents. He has a slew of aunts, uncles, and cousins, most of whom he doesn't talk to much on account of being out in space all the time.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
In TBGverse, Uhura is very nearly a second sister. They're incredibly close, and watch out for each other, and on occasion, Uhura orders him around when he's being an idiot. She's his common sense.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
His assistant, Keenser. They worked together when Scotty worked at the Academy, and Keenser went to Delta Vega with him after his exile following The Beagle Incident. Six months of living with one person will either make you hate them or become close to them, and Scotty considers Keenser his best friend.

6. Does he have other close friends?
He's fairly good friends with Dr. McCoy, and enjoys drinking and chatting with him.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He's very friendly, and tends to be nice to everyone, unless they're being an asshole to him. He claims he's no good at socializing, but he's better than he thinks.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
They're about the same, actually.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
In TBG verse, he's married to ship psychologist Elizabeth Dehner.
In all other verses he is not married and has never been married.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
He has several 'verses in which he has relationships. One 'verse has him in a relationship with Christine Chapel, one 'verse in a relationship with Dr. David Tinny.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
He doesn't have any current crushes, but his first crush was a fellow engineering student at the Academy.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
A sense of humor, to start with. Someone who complements his personality and doesn't mind that he's more or less married to his job. Anyone in a relationship with Scotty needs to understand that they'll be sharing him with the Enterprise.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
In TBG Futureverse, he and Liz are planning on having children.
All other 'verses, he is childless.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
None worth mentioning.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
About a 2 on the Kinsey scale. He's equally comfortable flirting with men and women, and equally comfortable going to bed with both, but he's more likely to flirt with women, out of personal preference.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
It's important in a relationship, but outside of relationships he has no problem if he's not getting laid. He's a bit shy about it in the beginning of a relationship, because he doesn't have much experience, since he's usually too busy working to bother thinking about it.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
There's not really any set list of turn-ons and turn-offs. His weirdest bedroom habit is probably the fact that he tends to drag foreplay out as long as possible. (It makes reaching the actual sex just that much better.)

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
He's a Pisces. He doesn't really seem to fit it, though.

I have no idea what his Chinese zodiac sign would be. He was born in 2222 after all.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
He's not really religious or spiritual. He probably leans more toward agnosticism, if not outright atheism.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
One of the biggest personal codes for him is that he takes the most dangerous jobs in the engine room – not because he doesn't trust his crew, but because he doesn't want to be responsible for their deaths if they were to make a mistake. He will not bend on this; it's too important to him.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Being a Starfleet officer and having trained in Starfleet Academy, he's very tolerant of others' ways, customs, cultures, and beliefs, because that's what's ingrained in every Starfleet officer. As long as it's not hurting anyone, he's of the opinion that people are free to believe what they want.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He hates Klingons. Hates Klingons. It's an irrational-rational prejudice. Lots of bad blood between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
He takes in an officer's salary, but while he's on the ship he hasn't really got much need for money. He spends a bit on shore leave, but for the most part he saves his money, so he's got a nice little sum saved up.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
As a Starfleet officer, he gets special privileges that civilians don't get, but that's about it. He doesn't really think about it much. As Chief Engineer, he's third in command on the ship, so when he orders something, people listen.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
In the engine room. Technically he has officer's quarters, which are larger and nicer than NCO quarters, but they stay mostly empty.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Booze. Whenever he gets a chance he stocks up on alcohol, because the replicated stuff just doesn't cut it.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He's an engineer. A Chief Engineer. He's bloody brilliant at it. He loves it. Wild horses couldn't drag him away to do something different.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
He has a not-quite-regulation still hidden in the engine room and brews his own alcohol. He collects tech journals, and reads them in his downtime. He also enjoys hanging out and having a few drinks with friends.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He tends to forget to eat sometimes. He gets wrapped up in his work and will go without breakfast or lunch, and end up eating when he remembers to do so. He practically lives on coffee. When he does remember to eat, though, he eats well.

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:

1. Color? Red, by association. A deep, rich green is his favorite, though.
2. Smell? That patented “inside of the engine” smell
3. Time of day? No specific time
4. Season? Summer
5. Book? His favorite is Lord of the Rings, though he mostly reads nonfiction
6. Music? Classic rock
7. Place? The engine room
8. Substance? Alcohol :D
9. Plant? Power plants...? idk
10. Animal? Dog
